Convened by Baraza Media Lab, the festival brought together more than 200 delegates from over 30 nationalities, including journalists, editors, content creators, and media scholars. It was a space filled with experience, fresh ideas, and honest discussions about where African media stands today and where it is headed.

Throughout the two days, participants explored what it truly means to stay resilient in a fast-changing, highly digitized media environment. Conversations focused on how storytelling can remain strong and impactful despite growing pressures, from shrinking newsroom resources to the intense competition brought by social media and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. Daniel Kalinaki, Chairman of Baraza Media Lab, emphasized that media organizations across Africa must be ready to handle emerging issues that come with media evolution, especially AI infiltration and social media competition. His message was clear: the future will not wait, and preparation is no longer optional.

One of the most memorable moments of the festival was the Africa Media Awards 2026. The awards honored journalists and media leaders whose work continues to strengthen public-interest media across the continent. In a time marked by disruption and transformation, the ceremony celebrated the courage, integrity, and deep commitment it takes to serve communities and uphold the truth. It was a reminder that resilient media is built by people who choose to stay in the work, even when the work is difficult.

The festival also paused to reflect on painful chapters in Africa’s media history. A powerful session revisited September 18, 2001, the day independent media in Eritrea was shut down and journalists were detained while the world’s attention was elsewhere. Through moving reflections, the panel honored journalists who remain imprisoned and the families who have continued to seek answers for decades. The message was simple but strong: silenced does not mean forgotten. Press freedom is a shared responsibility, and solidarity across borders matters.

Artificial intelligence was another major focus of the festival. In a hands-on session hosted by DW Akademie and led by Mwende Mukwanyaga, participants were introduced to the MethodKit for Journalism & AI, a practical tool designed to help newsrooms think carefully about the risks, opportunities, and responsibilities that come with using AI. Through guided discussions and real-life scenarios, journalists and editors were encouraged to make informed and ethical decisions about how they integrate technology into their work. The session reinforced an important idea: resilient storytelling means shaping how AI serves journalism, not allowing journalism to be controlled by AI.

In another engaging discussion, Dr. Rose Kimani and Attila Mong explored how African newsrooms can harness AI through local innovation, homegrown technology, and meaningful collaboration. They spoke about protecting marginalized voices, supporting low-resource languages, and building ethical AI systems that strengthen public-interest journalism rather than weaken it. The conversation challenged participants to think beyond adaptation and instead consider how African media can actively shape the future of technology in journalism.

As the Africa Media Festival 2026 closed, one theme stood out across every session and conversation: resilience is not just about surviving change. It is about building the future intentionally. It is about defending press freedom, honoring those who have been silenced, embracing innovation responsibly, and staying committed to telling stories that serve communities. The festival ended not just as an event, but as a reminder that the future of African media depends on those who are willing to shape it.

The message was simple but strong: silenced does not mean forgotten.
